Standard caravan and motorhome parts are manufactured to a global specification — which means they're typically tested for European roads, moderate climates, and relatively gentle use. Australian conditions are none of those things.
Three factors work in combination to destroy plastic parts faster in Australia than almost anywhere else: corrugated roads, UV radiation, and summer cabin heat. Each one alone is damaging. Together, they're why so many Australian RV owners find themselves searching for a replacement part that no longer exists.
Corrugated dirt roads create a specific type of damage that paved-road testing doesn't replicate. The washboard surface generates high-frequency vibration — typically in the 10–20Hz range — that transmits directly through the chassis and into every component on the vehicle.
Standard OEM plastics like ABS and polypropylene are rigid and brittle under cyclic stress. Each vibration cycle introduces microscopic cracks at stress concentration points — mounting holes, corners, thin sections. Over enough kilometres, those cracks propagate until the part fractures. It doesn't require a single impact. It just requires enough corrugated road.
PETG behaves differently. It has a higher elongation at break than ABS, meaning it flexes slightly rather than cracking under repeated load. Combined with high-density infill — what RV 3D calls Solid-Core manufacturing — there's more material to distribute stress across, so no single point becomes the failure point.
Australia has among the highest UV index readings in the world. Standard ABS and polypropylene break down under UV at a molecular level — the polymer chains degrade, causing the material to become brittle, chalky and discoloured. Parts that are flexible when new become snapping hazards within 12–24 months of consistent outdoor exposure.
PETG is significantly more UV stable than ABS. For external components or anything near windows, this difference alone can determine whether a part lasts one season or five.
A closed vehicle in Australian summer reaches temperatures most people don't associate with everyday plastic. RACV testing has recorded cabin air temperatures exceeding 70°C when outside air is only 30°C. Hard surfaces in direct sun run considerably hotter.
Standard PLA — common in hobbyist 3D printing — begins to deform above 60°C. ABS softens in the same range under load. Either material can warp, creep, or permanently deform when left in a closed Australian vehicle over summer.
PETG maintains structural stability to approximately 80°C under load, which keeps it safe in ambient cabin air even on extreme days. Direct sun on a surface is a different condition and worth avoiding for any plastic component — original fittings included.
The Australian RV market grew rapidly between 2020 and 2023, with new registrations hitting record highs during the travel boom. A large cohort of vans are now 3–6 years old — outside warranty, but well within useful life — and increasingly reliant on the aftermarket for replacement parts.
Many manufacturers, particularly those producing budget and mid-range caravans, don't maintain long parts inventories. Clips, trims, latches, and interior fittings are often discontinued within a few years of a model run ending. For owners of discontinued or lower-volume models, a broken part can mean no direct replacement available anywhere.
